There are millions of web pages out there. Search engines are useful tools aimed at helping Internet users find the best search results. The downside is that they find too much info. Continue reading to find out how to promptly find what you're seeking. So how do search engines work? Search engines make a data bank of sites by sending "spiders" or "robots" to go from link to link. When spiders get to a site, they index most words available. When you use a search engine, the engine scans its data bank of sites to match your keywords to those same keywords in pages in the data bank. How to make the search more effective? Search results can be improved easily. You merely need to know some fundamentals. Some search engines have guides to do this but for others you have to enter the right commands. The following basic commands should be plenty of info for most people and should work in most of the major search engines. - Specify what you're searching for The more specific you are, the more info you'll find. Tell the search engine exactly what you're seeking. Fir instance, if you're seeking science experiments, enter School Science Fair Projects rather of science projects. If you know it's a chemistry experiment, add the word 'chemistry' to your search. - The + symbol The most important terms in your search should be placed first. To make sure the search engine finds pages with all the words you're seeking, put the + symbol in front of each word. For example, if you're looking for information on Beyonce and Jay-Z, then enter +Beyonce +Jay-Z. Only pages which contain both words will be found. - The - symbol If you're searching for something specific but don't want tons of other info that's not related to your subject, use the - symbol. Fir instance, if you're looking for info on David Beckham but don't want to read about his charity work, enter David Beckham -Charity Work. - Quotation marks When you put your search terms in quotation marks, it's called a "phrase search." The engine will provide a list of pages that have the terms in the exact order as in quotations. Fir instance, if you're searching specifically for a bio on Kirsten Dunst, enter "Kirsten Dunst Biography" and see what comes up. - Using boolean operators Boolean operators can be used in most major search engines which provide advanced searching options. The most popular booleans are AND, OR and NOT. Boolean operators are like the + and - symbols. AND means "include all of the words," OR means "include any of the words" and NOT means "exclude." For example, if you're searching for information on bags and shoes, enter bags AND shoes. Your search will bring back websites that only include both those words.
